Box Making - My Version of An Explosion Box

I’ve recently been seeing these wonderful “Explosion Boxes”. They are photo albums inside a box. You open the box and the photos seems to explode out for viewing. I didn’t have the Green Sneakers Box Templates - but for $3.33 a kit, I couldn’t help but pick up the Box Making Kit, Frame Kit, and the Bag Making Kit. Then they arrived, and I had to get started. I knew the Box Making Kit would make several types of boxes, including the box and lid type normally used for Explosion Boxes. The minute I saw the Matchbook Box, though, I knew what I was going to make! It is perfect for an accordian style photo album tucked inside! In the picture above, (remember, you can click on any photo to see it full screen) notice the ribbon, just slide the ribbon off, and pull out the ‘drawer’ box inside.

Now my husband wouldn’t particularly be the type to have a photo collage of his children on his desk - but this is a whole better idea. This photo accordian album is attached to the box, and will stand on its own when pulled out.

So he can pull it out and look at it, or leave it in the wrapped box and just have it on his desk!

What I can’t believe is that the box only took 1 piece of 12″ x 12″ paper and the whole album only took 1 piece. So for 2 sheets of Periphery (BG), I was able to create the whole project. The embellishments were items I had in my scraps drawer. For my first project using the Box Making Kit, I’m very happy. It literally only took 10 minutes to make the box (sleeve and drawer), and about 20 minutes to create the album. The “drawer” (bottom) part just gets scored, cut, folded, and taped. The sleeve only gets scored, folded, and taped closed.

Using the Box Making Template for the scoring made it so easy, and I’m not usually good at “following directions” for putting things together - but this was really easy.

The Box measures 5″ x 3″, and the sleeve is slightly larger. The tags are slightly smaller than 5″ x 3″ (but the paper was 5″ x 6″ - folded in half) and I cut the angles (1″ down and 1″ across) at the top to create the tag shape. I then alternated gluing the sides together to form the accordian style album and decorated. I realized that it would be a lot easier to decorate before I adhered the whole album to the bottom of the drawer! But there is still room for the children to write a little note and sign it. Now, I’ll see if I can wait until his birthday to give it to him - probably not!
